Hi, everyone!  I've been mentally gearing myself up to quit for a year, and since then, I shattered my left wrist which did not heal properly so I had major surgery on it June 1/20, and my orthopaedic surgeon told me the bones in my arm will NOT heal as well, if at all - unless I quit smoking... NOW!  It's exactly what I needed to hear (and from a doctor who has specialised in bone-healing his entire career) to get the last hesitation/delay through my head, I had to have a chunk of my ulna removed, metal-plated and pinned, the pain has been severe for several months - and the thought of still having that much pain (for the rest of my life) because I ignored my surgeon... No, I cannot 'self-inflict' the pain in my left hand/wrist/arm by continuing to smoke. Being pain-free will come from the best of my abilities (along with physio, etc) - and there's no room for smoking in my future, I'm also having shoulder surgery (more bone-healing) and that's just the Top 2 Reasons, the rest of my health, and the well-being of my wallet will improve as well! I'm glad to have come across this Resource, and I'm looking forward to this new chapter in my life.

    Good morning Deb and welcome to the quit now community.  Sorry to hear that you're in constant pain but quitting will improve the odds of your healing a lot faster.  To begin,  pay a visit to your pharmacist who can advise you on nicotine replacement products that are free to all B.C. residents who have a B.C. medical card or talk to your doctor about prescriptions such as Zyban or Champix.  These help to suppress the urges to smoke.  Drink plenty of water to flush out the toxins and eat nutritious snacks  such as fruits and vegetables,  nuts of any kind,  sunflower or pumpkin seeds or even a small square of dark chocolate for when eating replaces cigarettes.  Avoid alcohol and coffee as this is a problem for some people. Try tea, hot chocolate or fruit juice instead. Distract by doing crosswords, puzzles, crafts of any kind or play games on your computer or I-Pod.    Exercise by taking a 30 minute or more walk everyday, to clear your lungs and for fresh air.  Try bicycling, swimming or other forms if you prefer.  Educate yourself by reading books such as Allan Carr's "Easy Way To Stop Smoking" or any other books on cigarette addiction.  For cravings take deep breaths, count to ten and exhale,  say NOPE to yourself several times during the day (Not One Puff Ever), try meditation or yoga or try guided imagery, where you imagine yourself in a wonderful place only without cigarettes.  This will help you relax or you can try warm baths, listening to soothing music, or watching a funny movie.  Rest if you must as quitting is hard work.  Take it one day and one step at a time and just do the best you can.  Last but not least call the quit coaches at 1-877-455-2233 for support and encouragement and to formulate a plan that will be beneficial to you.  It won't cost a penny, it's entirely free.  Reach out to us when you need to and we'll also help as much as we can.  Also a word of warning, expect the unexpected, flu like symptoms,   feelings of being spaced out, anxiety, coughing or crying at the drop of a hat, because you feel as if you've just lost your best friend.  These are all part of the withdrawals that some people may have to cope with during their quit.  However it will get better in time, perhaps a week to a month.  Sorry this is a long list but the tips really help to get you started.  Stay safe and well, hugs, Lucille.

      thank you so much, lucille - it's difficult typing one-handed as my left arm from the elbow to my fingers is heavily bandaged and very painful post-surgery and my right shoulder has surgery pending as well, so using my right hand/arm gets really tired/achy really quickly, too. I'm glad to have this support.

    Hi Deb, welcome to the forum
    Use the 5 D's for when cravings hit, delay, distract, deep breaths, drink water and discuss.  And use any tool available to help you with your quit, whether it be an NRT or this forum.  Quitting is hard, but doable with the right mindset and determination.  Welcome and good luck!

    I've changed my user name from Deb76 to Kismet - much of the last few years have occurred because of kismet, so I'm honouring that in this forum!
