Medication Guide
This section provides information on various smoking cessation aids approved for use in Canada, including those covered by the BC Smoking Cessation Program.
Remember:
- Using aids like NRT and prescription drugs can double your chances of quitting smoking.They can relieve nicotine craving and withdrawal symptoms .
- Getting counselling, along with using aids can increase your chances of quitting even more.
Note: The B.C. Smoking Cessation Program launches on Friday September 30, 2011. Coverage for smoking cessation aids will not start before this date.
Smoking cessation aids COVERED by B.C. Smoking Cessation Program
This program covers the following smoking cessation aids:

Two non-prescription (over-the-counter) NRT products:
- nicotine gum (Thrive™)

nicotine patches (Habitrol®)

Two prescription drugs:
- bupropion (brand name Zyban®); OR
- varenicline (brand name Champix®)

- Nicotine inhaler
While you may be tempted to opt for the medication that is covered by the B.C. Smoking Cessation Program, you may want to first discuss all options with your doctor or pharmacist to determine what is the best choice for you.
Talk to your doctor if this applies to you
If you are currently taking any prescription medications, or if you have any serious health issues (such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems, kidney disease, breathing problems) or are pregnant or breast feeding, your best plan is to talk to your doctor before starting any smoking cessation medications.
